CASE STUDY: THURROCK SHOPPING CENTRE

Where: Thurrock Lakeside Shopping Centre

What: Replacement of packaged heating/cooling roof-top units

Client: ?

The challenge: Our brief was to change all the heating/cooling units for Lakeside Shopping Centre, which were located all over the roof of the centre. The units varied in lengths from 2 mtrs to 10mtrs and weights up to 6500kgs.

The replacement had to be phased and undertaken from all sides of the shopping centre, with various sizes of cranes. Everything had to take place during night shift periods so not to disrupt trading for the shopping centre’s retail outlets.

We engaged with a structural engineer to undertake the structural design and reports for the largest crane (1000te) and its location. His report underlined the need for concrete pile caps of 15 metres depth to be positioned at the proposed outrigger locations in the centre’s car park.

This was necessary because of the outrigger load of 138te which, without the pile caps, would have resulted in the outriggers of the crane sinking into the car park due to the centre having been built on an old gravel pit.

We designed and implemented this solution ourselves, and it took approximately three weeks to complete.

We offloaded and stored all the new units at our storage facility, re-loaded when required and delivered safely to site.

Cranes of varying sizes were deployed at points around the centre to achieve the removal and replacement of the units. The units were at differing points on the roof, and all had to be split into sections prior to their removal. This was undertaken by our team of engineers during the day, to make ready for that night’s lifting.

All lifting had to be completed before the centre opened on the following day

Equipment used:

  • specialised wide load transport

Our expertise:

  • Highly trained slinger/signallers
  • Appointed persons
  • Crane supervisors

Result

All works went as planned in some exceedingly difficult crane locations, and despite very inclement weather conditions.
